Ume "Within My Bones" Directed by: Jeremy Ward
I wanted to do a video that definitely had a story but wasn't necessarily all apparent on the first viewing. I like stories that are a little bit of work to figure out. This one has three distinct parts Childhood that is shown with water and sand. (Very malleable.) Adolescence which is shown as a forest. (Things growing and taking shape.) Adulthood is represented as an artifice of rigid metal and plastic forming a monument of our earliest desires.
The mother takes her child to the beach. Something happens and the child is left alone. The child builds a shelter with things she finds on the beach, but we discover when she is older that she has never left the beach or stopped waiting for her mother to return. She has spent her life building a castle like the sand castle she once built with her mother.
Ume's album is entitled Monuments and I wanted the video to be about one. The song, to me, was about loss so I wanted the monument to be about the kind of loss you never recover from. The castle is a monument to her loss but it is also meant to be about all of us building monuments to the loss of childhood.

This video means so much to me. When I heard the track for the first time, I fell in love instantly. The treatment/concept flowed freely - I was able to pull from a lot of intimate, personal experiences. Luckily for me, along with having the best crew in the world, i was also lucky enough to end up with the most amazing, talented cast. Our lead girl blew me away throughout the entire process, and Keith, our lead guy, was a total dream. It was the most fun ive ever had on a shoot and it'll be tough to beat.
